Sustainability

Sustainability has to be right at the heart of every aspect of architectural, structural and environmental engineering design. The structure of a building needs to respond to the needs of the client and the architectural and environmental strategy of the building. This integrated design approach is key to the delivery of elegant, cost effective, buildable structures.

Our conservation work teaches us about traditional ways of doing things that are equally relevant today. In an era where materials were handcrafted, they did not go to waste. Lime mortars meant that bricks and stone could be re-used. Good detailing was essential, as was good maintenance – lessons that we apply to our structural engineering design today.

Developing innovative, sustainable solutions to engineering design challenges is in our blood. We believe structural engineering is far more than just sizing a frame and we look to bring value to all our projects beyond our immediate remit as engineers. The key to making sustainable design work is the quality of thinking.
