Strengthening a Grade I listed staircase

22 March 2019

The main staircase at Grade I listed Boston Manor House has suffered from settlement since the end of the 17th Century when alterations were made to the house.

With the house now being refurbished and open to the public the loads on the staircase are increasing. Integral have undertaken extensive opening up work to understand the stair structure and allow us to design the strengthening required. The strengthening involves inserting new cantilevered steel elements within the existing ¼ landing structural depth and hanging the upper flights from new structure within the roof void. All this work has been designed with the rare and historically important 17th Century wall paper in mind.
