The Kingswood Locality Hub is a new three storey multi use building with a mix of public spaces and council offices bringing together council and health services for children and young people. A concrete flat slab structure was the solution for the heavily serviced public spaces at ground floor level. This solution avoids the use of beams which hinder the flow of services and provides exposed thermal mass. Above the ground floor the office spaces are solid timber with elegant exposed ceilings. The timber is sourced from FSC approved forests which sequester over 250 tonnes of carbon. One of the advantages of using solid timber is that construction can continue during inclement weather, consequently no days on site were lost during the bad winter of 2010 – 2011.
