Swansea Castle

Swansea, Wales

Cadw is seeking to improve public access while preserving the castle’s historic integrity. The city-centre site comprises the ruins of two remaining buildings: the Grade I listed and Scheduled Monument Swansea Castle and the Prison.

While the castle is in reasonable condition for its age, the buildings are currently accessible only externally. A lack of ongoing maintenance has led to vegetation growth, cracking, water ingress and areas of loose stonework. The project aims to enhance the surrounding public realm and improve internal access, allowing visitors to explore the spaces within the castle and enjoy views from the upper levels.

As with all conservation projects, our approach is to retain as much historic fabric as possible through minimal, proportionate intervention while ensuring structural safety.
