Neath Abbey, Port Talbot

Integral collaborated with Cadw on a five-year plan to provide structural engineering expertise aimed at consolidating, restoring and safeguarding the historic monastic ruins of Neath Abbey. Founded in 1130, the abbey later became part of the Cistercian order and underwent several reconstructions before the dissolution of the monasteries. During this period, parts of the site were converted into a Tudor Mansion house. Over time, the site also served as a copper smelting and casting workshop before coming under state ownership in the early 20th century.

Our primary focus was assessing overhanging or unstable masonry and specifying repairs and to provide solutions for water ingress into the wall cores. We advised on loading and investigation works to the existing 1960s roof structure over the Abbot’s Dormitory, constructed using railway tracks and reinforced concrete, spanning between the head of the vaults below.
