Apex City of Bath Hotel

A demolition and new build project on a brownfield site in a city centre location which required careful consideration of the impact on nearby buildings and highways. Integral Engineering Design provided the structural and civil engineering services for this new 177 bed 4 star hotel with extensive leisure and conference facilities. The conference facility accommodates 400 people and has associated break out spaces. There is also a bar, restaurant and basement spa complex with pool and gym. We designed several stories of cellular accommodation directly above the large conference facilities which are column free. By changing from a conventional reinforced concrete frame to a post-tensioned one, we reduced the embodied carbon by over 200 tonnes. The basement covers the majority of the site and attention had to be paid to the adjoining buildings, highways and services to ensure that they were not undermined and that ground movements were kept to a minimum. Shallow piles were used as the hotel sits directly above the historic thermal waters which could not be compromised by the construction of the basement and foundations. Collaborative design solutions has meant the project has met the programme.
