Dental School, University of Bristol

The University of Bristol set out to create the UK’s leading dental teaching facility. In response to this ambitious brief, a series of state-of-the-art, student-focused clinical suites were designed to provide a modern and collaborative learning environment. Alongside facilities for urgent care, restorative dentistry and child dental health, the building also incorporates sterile services, skills laboratories, teaching spaces, offices, and a range of social and event areas.

Located in the heart of Bristol city centre, adjacent to the Floating Harbour, the project has successfully transformed an existing office building into a vibrant educational hub. The development required a high level of coordination between the structural and building services designs to deliver the complex technical requirements of a modern dental school.

As with many refurbishment projects, a thorough understanding of the existing steel frame and concrete floor slabs was essential. Maximising the reuse of the existing structure not only reduced embodied carbon but also delivered significant cost savings, contributing to the project’s overall sustainability objectives.
