LILAC Housing

Leeds

A development of 20 affordable, sustainable homes with a small common house with facilities for the local community using the unique prefabricated straw bale system ModCell®. It was at the time the largest and first three storey, straw bale housing development in the UK. ModCell® allows super-insulated, high-performance, low energy ‘passive’ buildings to be built using renewable, locally sourced, carbon sequestration materials including straw bales to create a less than zero carbon construction system. The straw for LILAC was sourced from nearby farmers and each average three bed house will lock up nearly 50 tonnes of carbon emissions.

“Great recognition for a simple idea – that we can build houses that are affordable while also protecting our environment and building a strong sense of community.”

Paul Chatterton, Secretary of Low Impact Living Affordable Community (LILAC)
