The University of Bristol wanted to have the number one dental teaching building in the country. To meet this brief, state of the art clinical suites were required which were student focussed and with an appropriate collaborative environment. As well as urgent, restorative and child dental health, the building incorporates sterile services, skills and laboratories as well as supporting office, social and events spaces. This project, in the heart of Bristol city centre, alongside the Floating Harbour, will transform an existing office building into a thriving educational hub. A high degree of coordination and understanding was required between the structural design and services. As with many refurbishments researching the existing building and maximising the reuse of the existing structure was important for saving embodied carbon and costs.
