Championing low carbon solutions
7 June 2019
Integral have always taken a strong and proactive interest in sustainable design and in particular embodied carbon.
With genuine concern about the climate change challenges ahead, the practice had a productive CPD discussion this week on how we can offer more proactively our expertise in this area. In global carbon emissions, from all sources, constructing buildings account for 16%. However there is no one standard that can guide structural and civil engineering designers in reducing embodied carbon. The best approach we have found is to model early in the design the structural options to review the embodied content of each. We agreed that we will offer this to our design teams and clients, using in-house programmes, to ascertain the most appropriate carbon friendly solution. Considering the environment not only helps our planet but adds value in terms of cost effectiveness, encouraging an efficient design and material specification approach.
