From virtual to reality

The staircase we designed for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) at Union Street is taking shape on site.

The helical design links the two existing buildings, each with differing floor levels, one a 1980s concrete office block the other a Victorian warehouse. Each landing uses the structure within the balustrade to cantilever out from new vertical supports, within the façade of each building, which support each flight of stairs. The stair has been fabricated in sections by Littlehampton Welding and is initially bolted together on site. Once all the pieces are in place the stair will be welded up to conceal all the connection and create a seamless sculptural form.
